Greystoke WI

At the August meeting we enjoyed a beautiful illustrated talk about the wild flowers of the Dolomites. Our speaker, David Morley, introduced himself as an ecologist who works to help farmers access ELMS. He and Isobel visited the Dolomites for a wild flower walk and then ended up leading walks there for the next few years. David explained the unique geology of the area and how that leads to a huge range of about 2,000 wild flowers. He imagined he was leading us on a walk from Corvara up to the summit of a mountain, walking through woodland, hay meadows, high mountain meadows and then alpine rocks and scree. He showed us slides of the typical plants for each habitat. David spoke about some of the adaptations which enable the plants to grow in a cold dry environment. Many were low growing and had tiny leaves to prevent water loss. The high mountain flowers have to flower quickly and set seed. David answered questions and recommended Teasdale as a place to go to see similar wild flowers.

On Thursday 5 September we look forward to hearing from Judith Cook who is an author and singer. The competition will be a quote about kindness.

If you would like to join us at WI meetings, please contact Sue, Val or Jennifer.

Greystoke Parish Council

The next Parish Council meeting is at 7.00pm on Tuesday 10 September in the Village Hall.

Bus Action Group Update

I am delighted to say that the Westmorland and Furness Council have just approved funding for a bus running frequently between Greystoke and Penrith.

In terms of next steps, the council will put this route out to tender to find a suitable provider. Details of the timetabling are being worked through, but I would like us to be front and centre of those discussions and I will lobby the council to ensure we get what is most useful to us.

I’ll keep our subsite updated with developments, but this is very good news, well done to everyone who has contributed!

Pam Wood, on behalf of the BAG (soon to be BUG – Bus User Group).

 Greystoke Village Hall

We invite you to join us for a delicious a homemade soup and pudding lunch in the Hall on Sunday 13 October from 11.30am to 2.00pm.

The hall has been spruced up over the summer and we plan to improve the access to the carpark. Proceeds from the lunch will be put towards this project. Donations of soups and puddings gratefully received.

More details to follow. We look forward to seeing you there.

Greystoke Parish Community Housing

Progress continues on Community Housing as we welcomed some new volunteers this month. We are also starting the process of establishing a Community Land Trust (CLT) after a recent visit to Patterdale CLT.

The council has opened consultation on a new Local Plan, and we encourage everyone to contribute – surveys close on the Monday 9 September, and it’s important to share your views so you are represented. Read more at housing.greystokevillage.co.uk.

The Friends of Saint Andrew’s Church Greystoke

Following on from the notice in the July/August magazine, we are now able to confirm the details of the launch of this new group.

The launch will take place in the church on Saturday 7 September from 10.30am to 12.30pm. You can arrive and leave at any time; this is because it is a taster event where you choose what you would like to see and hear about. Have you ever wondered why the church faces East? Have you ever wanted to go up the Bell Tower? Wondered how the organ works? Wanted to know more about the big East Window or the strange carvings underneath the seats at the East end? Did you know that there is a statue made by prisoners of war who were imprisoned in Greystoke Castle? Come to our launch and be excited by discovering even more.

We all know what a beautiful historic church we have in Greystoke and how much we would wish to ensure it remains in good repair and open and available to all. The Rev. Martin and all the Trustees of the Friends group will be there to answer questions.

The Friends group will be an independent charitable incorporated organisation that will be registered with the Charity Commission. The constitution has now been sent to the Charity Commission for their approval and once this has been received the new charity becomes fully operational.

The trustee group consists of four elected trustees, two from the church council (PCC) and two from the Parish Council, and a further four interested trustees from the village and local area.

You will also have the opportunity if you wish to join the new group as a member and support the work to keep the church in good repair by a £10 yearly membership fee. (Please leave your name and contact details and we will contact you for your membership fee, following Charity Commission approval.)

So please do come along on Saturday 7 September and find out more about our fascinating church, climb the Tower to view the bells, and enjoy coffee and cakes.
