Greystoke Parish Community Housing

Our survey closed on Tuesday 14 May (at time of writing it’s still open!). We’ll let you know the results and next steps via facebook and the website – maybe by the time you read this we’ve already started! Meanwhile, thanks to those who have volunteered offers of help. We’d love to hear from anyone with experience of house building, e.g., builders, architects, planners, who would be willing to help, and anyone else who could spare some time, even just helping out with admin. Greystoke Parish Council

The next Parish Council meeting is at 7.00pm on Tuesday 11 June in the Village Hall.

Greystoke WI

On Thursday 2 May, Greystoke WI heard about making chocolates at home. Isobel Morley came to talk to us about her hobby, which has become a business. Isobel told us about setting up her chocolate kitchen in what had been their garage and the necessary equipment, supplies and techniques of chocolate making. There were a wide variety of fillings, some based on puddings, and others on Italian or Lakeland flavours. Isobel is able to produce gluten free and dairy free chocolates. Her creations can be bought at the Stainton Farmers’ Market or online from her website. After her generous free samples, there was a very long queue at the end of the evening to buy her products. Her chocolates were exquisite to look at as well as to sample. We were very grateful to Isobel and her husband for giving up their evening for us. We were also grateful to Di and Jan for the refreshments and to John Danks for setting up the projector for Isobel.

In June we look forward to hearing from Ross Downing about Cotton at Cummersdale, the story of Stead McAlpine. The competition will be an heirloom textile so it will be a chance to show off your Grandma’s or your Mum’s beautiful embroidery.

If you would like to join us at WI meetings, please contact Sue, Val or Jennifer.

Hospice at Home Bingo Night

Roy Fisher’s Granddaughter and her friend, Kate Jackson, are raising money for Hospice at Home with a Bingo Night at Greystoke Village Hall on Friday 14 June. Doors open at 7.00pm with the first game at 7:30pm. Hot drinks and homemade cakes will be served at half time, and there will also be an auction with lots of fantastic local items. Tickets (at the door) cost £10 and include bingo books and refreshments. All in aid of Hospice at Home.

The nurses who work for this organisation are currently looking after Edith, and Roy doesn’t know how he could have coped without their help. It is a tremendous organisation, and it is not all doom and gloom as they have some really happy times as well. Nothing is too much trouble to them.

If you can support these two young people in any way it would be much appreciated as they will need prizes for the bingo, the raffle and the promise auction.

Charity Quiz Night

Put your quizzing skills to the test at Greystoke Village Hall at 7.00pm on Saturday 22 June at a charity quiz night in aid of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Greystoke Primary School. With a half-time pit-stop for pie and peas plus great prizes for the winning teams, as well as the opportunity to take home a Champagne Taittinger hamper in the raffle, this is sure to be a memorable evening.

The monies raised on the night will go to Duchenne UK, a charity aiming to find better treatments for this muscle-wasting condition, which affects one of Greystoke’s pupils. A portion of the proceeds will also go to Greystoke Primary School so get your teams together.

Pie and peas are included in the ticket price £12. It is an over-18s only event with a licensed bar.

To buy tickets, go online, email Rebecca or call her on 07414 541820. If you are a business who wishes to pledge a raffle prize, do get in touch.

Greystoke Open Gardens and Scarecrow Trail

This popular village event, on Sunday 23 June between 11.00am and 3:00pm, is being organised jointly by St. Andrew’s Church, the Parish Council, the Village Hall and the Village School – a real whole village event.

There will be a wonderful trail taking you around the village to view gardens and scarecrows. There will also be a fête in the school grounds which will include children’s games and ice cream, and of course the Village Hall will have a café serving teas, coffees, delicious homemade cakes and scones throughout the day.

Maps of the trail will be available to buy at £3 each. These can also be purchased at the village post office in the two weeks before the event.

To help us make this day a real success we need as many folk involved as possible, whether it be opening your garden, creating a scarecrow or helping out in the café by serving or baking.

If you would like to pop a scarecrow outside your property for visitors to enjoy as they walk around, please feel free even if you have not previously stated an interest.

If you think you can help us in any way please contact either Maureen or Laura.

Greystoke Pool

The pool and café are now open for the summer. Come and enjoy a swim in our heated pool. We are open 3.00pm to 6.00pm on school days, 1.00pm to 6.00pm all other days.

Enjoy a tea and a scone in the café – you don’t need to swim!

Adult swimming is available morning and evening, with membership details available on our website.

The pool is run by volunteers so we always welcome more help. Just ask in the café.

Greystoke History Group

This new group has been set up to record and explore the history of Greystoke and its surrounding areas. At this stage, we would really welcome any new members that want to join the group to collect stories, search archives or write up the stories and history.

Our main focus at present is on capturing all the fascinating stories from residents past and present about the history of the village and of their own lives.

If you would like to join the group or share your story, photos and history, please contact Stephen Nicol
