Due to ongoing concerns from the community and evidence from the village speed cameras we know that speeding through Greystoke village is a major issue. Greystoke Parish Council intends to make an application to Westmorland and Furness Council for a 20mph speed limit within the village.

Our aim in doing so is to promote safer roads, reduce vehicle pollution and noise, to enhance the environment for the community to make it a more pleasant and safer area for families, cyclists, walkers and riders.

As part of the Westmorland and Furness Council application criteria used to assess requests for 20mph schemes it is a requirement that the proposal is supported by the local community and any introduction of the 20mph speed limit within the village will be subject to consultation.

If you are in support of the 20mph speed limit within the village please join us at a drop-in session on Tuesday 13^th February 2024 in the village hall from 6pm-6.45pm. Councillor Day and Councillor Thompson will be in attendance throughout the session.

If you cannot come along on the night, then there will be a support petition for you to sign in the village shop and the Boot & Shoe.

Rob Walker Obituary
On Wednesday 7 June I attended the funeral of Robert (Rob) Walker. Never before have I attended a funeral of one so young – 38 years of age. He now lies beside his father who died some 16 months ago.

Rob was a lovely lad, born in Greystoke, loved by all who knew him, dedicated to his work as a brickie and plasterer and loved his sport (football, darts and golf). I have played with Rob and, only in February, I got details from Appleby Golf Club for him to come and play there. He said we shall have a game together; well we know now that was never going to happen.

Cancer is a terrible thing; it took his father, and his mother, Janice, is a survivor of it. What more can life throw at her? Janice is loved by everyone!

Rob is survived by two elder brothers, Daniel and Mathew.

Rest in peace Rob; you were loved and respected by all who knew you.

Taffy Thomas Storyteller
We are very lucky to have Taffy Thomas Storyteller coming to Greystoke on Monday 3 July.

Taffy was the first Storyteller Laureate as well as having an MBE for storytelling. He is also an international storyteller having told stories in many countries on four continents. He has a repertoire of over 300 stories and is still collecting.

The monies donated by you all at Mel’s funeral will be paying for some of this as Mel was a big believer in storytelling and Taffy will be telling the children one of Mel’s favourite stories which he told to children in his classes.

Taffy will be at Greystoke School in the morning and with the Social Group in the afternoon. Please come along, everyone will be most welcome to Tea and Tales at the Village Hall at 2pm on the 3rd July to meet Taffy, hear some of his stories and also see his beautiful Storyteller Coat. I have personally known Taffy for around 30 years now and have never heard the same story twice.

Greystoke WI
Greystoke WI welcomed Daisy Rocke as our speaker on Thursday 1 June.

On Thursday 6 July we have a trip out to visit Fellside Flowers, Long Marton. £10 per person, including refreshments.

On Thursday 3 August we have our Open Night, where we welcome guests from the village. Emma from Fellside Flowers will show slides and give a talk about how she started her business. The competition will be flowers in an eggcup or a teacup.

The best kept garden presentation will take place at this meeting.

Bus Action Group
An initial meeting to gauge the demand for a regular bus service through the village is scheduled for Thursday 29 June at 7.00pm in the Village Hall. This meeting is open to neighbouring villages with or without a regular bus service.

Roy’s Reminisce
On Tuesday 16 May I asked for nominations for the Greystoke Parish Council Chairman’s role. I am now free of all my commitments on committees and, for the first time in 51 years, my diary is blank.

I have had the honour of working with some fantastic people, and together we have, I believe, done Greystoke proud in raising hundreds of thousands of pounds, not only for Greystoke, but for local charities as well. It started many years ago when they wanted a cancer scanner at Carlisle Infirmary. We got to know the people who ran it very well and when it was installed had a personal tour of how it worked.

I was asked to join the Village hall committee in 1972 and also asked if I would be the assistant Secretary for the Swimming Pool project as the Secretary at the time, the late Martha Clarke, wanted to step down when the pool opened in 1973. She had done tremendous work in raising money for a good number of years as there was no swimming pool in the area, not even Penrith. I took over from her and was secretary for 17 years.

The late Stafford and Gracia Howard, who lived in Greystoke Castle, were also a great help to our Village organisations giving a 99 year lease on the playing field, and Stafford was also on the committee. Mrs Howard was the Chairman of the School governors and also on the Village Hall committee. We held Country Fairs at the castle and I was Chairman of the sports committee and we held a bonfire and fireworks event every November for 21 years with the castle floodlit in the background – what a tremendous sight, with some 40 people helping on the night and raising thousands of pounds to be used for the sports day and giving some of the profit to local organisations.

We did sponsored walks, bike rides, autumn fairs, swimming galas, chip suppers, car treasure hunts, valentine and charity balls, disco dances, open gardens, scarecrow trails and many other fund raising events to keep our village amenities ticking over.

I was also a Director and Chairman of Keswick Golf Club for about 10 years. My highlight was giving CPR to my fellow golfer who had a heart attack and I managed to bring him back to life some 8 years ago and he is still with us today.

I was the Greystoke Ward Councillor on Eden District Council for 14 years, Chairman of that in 2004, and attended one of the Queens garden parties 10 years ago, the day the young soldier Lee Rigby was murdered on the streets of London. I was the Licensing Committee chairman for 12 years and on the Cumbria Playing Fields Committee for 18 years until it was disbanded. I was also a football referee for 15 years and have played darts all my life – and still am.

My high point was meeting and getting married to my wife Edith who was born in Greystoke and is one of only a handful of people who can say they still live here. At the end of August we shall have been married 60 years. I have Edith and my family to thank for allowing me to have been involved in so many things with so many tremendous people.

I have been employed all my life working with the Farming fraternity with a big corporation in animal health and chemicals for farmers, then in January 1990 I started on my own employing one person and a part time secretary for 10 years, then sold out in July 2000 as foot and mouth devastated our area in February 2001.

I thank you for your co-operation and the journey I have shared with you. I should say my biggest disappointment was Story Homes getting away with only 6 affordable homes in Fawn Meadows when they should have been 12, and my most pleasing moment getting planning permission on an old quarry the Parish council owned at Blencow when the planning officers were so against it which we sold for over £100,000.

When I was lad we called the bridge along the Penrith road the ‘Bowlo’ bridge because it was next to the old bowling green. The bridge along the road heading to Poplin was called Gandi’s bridge because Archie Norman (Gandi) lived just over the wall.  The bridge down the old road was called, well, the old road bridge.

It was some time later after looking at maps etc. that I found out that all these bridges had proper names. Bowlo bridge is called Thorpe bridge. Gandi’s bridge is called Sharkey bridge. The old road bridge is called Storch bridge.

When the road was altered in 1939 the new bridge was called New Storch bridge and there is plaque calling it that on the right hand side heading towards Penrith.

I wondered why Sharkey bridge was so called, so I went to the Greystoke equivalent of Google, and asked Alan Hayton. It was named after the man that designed and built it, a Mr. Sharkey. He was an Irishman, an architect and stonemason, and was employed on Greystoke castle estate many moons ago. There is building on the estate also named after him, a stone barn? I am not sure where.

Anyway when a group of us decided to reclaim and restore the waste ground either side of the beck beside Sharkey bridge, we named it Sharkey park. We also felt it was important that the name of the bridge was made known to everyone, so we managed to raise a little bit of cash and got a plaque made.

Greystoke used to sport a total of 4 pubs, including 1 Inn – the Boot and Shoe, of course. But as our local history expert Allan Marshall explains, there was a crucial difference between a pub and an inn:

The Boot and Shoe Inn is the only pub shown on old ordinance survey maps. An Inn provided accommodation and was shown on maps. Public houses in those days were just someone’s house with a room where you could purchase ale.

The Cricketers Arms

The Cricketers Arms. Just beyond you can see a horse standing. This was the blacksmiths shop, hence Smithy Court. The blacksmiths shop became the start of Mandales Garage. The house to the left of the old pub, that has scaffolding on the chimney, was Florine Howells shop. I used to go in there in the fifties and get four aniseed balls for a penny.

The Cricketers Arms still exists. It is the very first building on Berrier Road. It is now two houses. Squirrel Cottage and The Cottage. Perhaps if the present owners read this they might do some renaming!

The Cricketers Arms was known as Garage House in later years as it was next to Mandales garage. Mary and I lived in Garage House when we first got married and one of the rooms was the office for the garage. Ruby Mounsey was the secretary and had permission to use our bathroom and the garage bog was no place for a lady!  Allan Marshall

The Pelican

The Pelican was a pub situated on Church Road. Today the house still has the same name.

Crossways

The 3rd pub in the Village was Crossways, the white house situated at the top of Church Road, opposite the Post Office.

The Boot and Shoe

Finally the Inn.  The Boot and Shoe is now the only pub in the village.

The Boot and Shoe is a 16th Century Coaching Inn dating from 1511, and it’s 500 year old name apparently comes from a former Duke of Norfolk who at the time lived in Greystoke Castle.  It is said that to ease the pain of gout, he used to wear a Boot on one foot and a Shoe on the other.

Greystoke used to have a bowling green. It used to be on what is now the playing field, in the corner nearest the Penrith road bridge. It was still there in the late fifties / early sixties but had fallen into disuse. Instead, football and cricket end up being played on it.  The children called it the “bowlo” and the bridge was always known as the “bowlo bridge”.

It was opened on the 31st August 1929 by Lady Mabel Howard who also bowled the first wood. What a shame it is not there today for all us wrinkles to while away our time. More information will be available at the opening of the refurbished swimming pool changing rooms.

There was a football game most evenings at the bowling green, weather permitting. I could look out of my bedroom window on Icold Rd and there was a sliver of space between the Dutch barn and the farmhouse on the Robinsons’ farm on Church Rd (which became the Dixon farm). I’d look at this for a few seconds and if a ball traversed that space I knew something was starting. We’d pick sides, sometimes only three or four a side to start with, but as others came the teams got bigger. We’d play until dark, or until one side scored ten goals, whichever came first. No goalposts, just heaps of jackets or sweaters. It was less than half the size of a regular football pitch, and sometimes the teams were bigger than eleven a side, so very crowded. It didn’t matter. Cricket was harder, as it demanded a smoother wicket, but we managed that as well. There was an old green pavilion from bowling days, which eventually got pulled down and replaced by a fine set of swings. (Maurice Mandale)

Usually the two best footballers got to pick the teams. They would pick the best players in descending order down to the not so good. (That was me). If you were picked last it didn’t do your ego much good.  The bowling green bower went up to the football field at Greystoke Gill and was used as changing rooms. When the playing field was developed the footballers started to play there. The bower came with them and was re-erected where the swimming pool is now. (Allan Marshall)

Annie at Quirky Workshops is generously hosting 3 wreath making workshops to raise funds for the Church, the Swimming Pool and the Village Hall.  Annie says:

Lynn Cowperthwaite has been running a rescue centre for hedgehogs here in the village for a while now. As her work has become more widely known, care has become more expensive so she has set up a GoFundMe page for donations. 

I have rescued hedgehogs for a number of years, all self-funded. I now find myself in the position of being more known and therefore getting more rescues. Either I try to get help with funding, or I refuse to take poorly hogs or orphaned hoglets on, which I know I would struggle to do!

 

I use lots of cat food (not fish) and biscuits, pate types for weaning, whiskers cat and kitten biscuits are best (no milk in) kitten powdered milk, kitchen roll, newspaper, good straw for bedding. I’ve just ordered another run for the garden, I use medical stuff and I would like a ‘pot’ of money for when vet attention is needed or I need to purchase things.

 

To my knowledge, I’m the only hedgehog rescuer in my area.  So all those hedgehog lovers out there – I need your help!

Volunteer Beaver and Scout Leaders wanted

Might you be able to help out a local Beaver Scout group by becoming an Adult Leader?
Might you feel you can help this busy and active group of 6-8 year olds keep going?
Might you be able to commit to attending a weekly hour on a Tuesday evening during term time?

So what are the basics?

The group is 1st Petteril Vale and the Beavers meet in Blencowe Village Hall on Tuesdays from 5.15 pm-6.15 pm. Currently, there are 20 Beavers and a strong team of adult helpers. However, we will be losing 2 leaders and we desperately need more. The program is very varied and active and is planned a term ahead so you will always know what your commitment is.

What kind of person are we looking for?

You should be happy to work with this age group and be able to be a fun and flexible adult as well as being able to confidently lead and guide Beavers through the sessions. To work as part of a developed Leadership team and to be able to offer a commitment to most sessions and associated meetings. You may be looking to enhance your CV as you work towards a career working with children or outdoor pursuits. You may even feel you just want to give back into Scouting if you used to enjoy all the benefits of it. Whatever your reasons, please do contact us.

And what do you get out of it?

An excellent personal development opportunity where you can gain accredited certification in a whole host of outdoor activities as well First Aid and Safe Guarding training. Creating contacts and links in the community as the groups Leadership teams have many professionals within it. A chance to be part of a vibrant local group who are constantly working closely with the community as well as other groups in the District. The Scouting Association has a very developed training system so you will be guided and assisted every step of the way. You do not need these skills to start, just a willingness to take on the training.

The Greystoke Village website

Whether you are a visitor to the village or a local resident, this is the best place to find accommodation, places to eat and drink, local shops and activities.  Plus, we’ve added a News section where we keep people up to date on what’s new.

The website is run on a not for profit basis, with the intention that extra money goes back into the community. Details tbc. A £20 annual listing on here contributes to the running costs, such as hosting, domain name purchase, security certificates and other necessities.  Billing is in January, but you can join part way through the year at a rate of £5 per remaining quarter, so, for example, someone joining in May would pay £15.

If you run a community group, you can list for free! We have a small team (2, to be precise) of local volunteers who will be able to update the website. So if you do want a listing added, or are interested in helping us keep the website up to date, please get in touch via email:  enquiry@greystokevillage.co.uk

What’s Next?

Well, bear in mind we’ve just relaunched, so there is still some initial work to do to get this up to date!

You’ll soon see some new business listings on here, as some more local shops and services join us. You’ll also see the community side start to grow.  Once we’re happy the listings are in a good state. then we’ll look to add more features over time, such as an Events Calendar, perhaps.  We’ll let the community help guide what we do.

This year is the 12th Greystoke Village Christmas Pageant which will be held at St. Andrew’s Church on Thursday 20 December at 6 pm. Everyone is welcome to watch the children of Greystoke School perform a Christmas Nativity play. There will be mulled wine, mince pies, hot sausage sandwiches and lots of Christmas stalls. It is an enjoyable evening for all. If you would like to take part, have a stall, or know someone who may be interested, please get in touch with the school on 017684 83 572. All stalls are free and you are very welcome.

Christmas Floodlighting of Greystoke Church. It is that time of year, when amongst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas festivities, we can give thought to Christmas’s past, and especially those loved ones who are sadly not with us. I am sure you will agree with me, how nice it is to see the Church lit up over this time. If anyone would like to donate to this fund,
to allow this to happen once more, in memory of those very special people, we would be so grateful. Please contact any Church member.

Greystoke WI’s November meeting was an informative talk by Hede Jackson about manufacturing Free From food, especially gluten-free products. She explained how many supermarkets are supplied by Bells at Lazonby. Alternatives to wheat flour were examined such as rice flour, brown rice flour and tapioca flour. Dairy-free products were also mentioned. There were also free samples to try. Her company is used by many big names on the High Street who just need one or two Free From products on their shelves.

On Thursday 6 December it is our AGM. We will also listen to the Greystoke Handbell Ringers and sing some carols. The competition will be a gift-wrapped parcel up to the value of £5 for the raffle. WI members are also asked to bring a small plate of food to share.

There is no meeting in January, but there will be a meal at the Brantwood on Friday 18 January. If you would like to join us please contact Hazel McGrath.

Carol Service, St. Andrew’s Church, Greystoke Everyone is very welcome to come and sing their favourite carols and to hear once again the wondrous story of the birth of Jesus, in church at 6 pm on Sunday 23 December. We shall be entertained by the Handbell Ringers and celebrate with the winners of the Christmas Tree competition. Refreshments will be provided.

Christingle, St. Andrew’s Church, Greystoke, 3 pm on Christmas Eve. You are invited to begin Christmas with the retelling of the message of the Christingle – each part giving us a glimpse of the story of Jesus. This is a wonderful way for families to engage with the real meaning of Christmas. We look forward to meeting you all.

Frost Fair, Saturday 1 December St. Andrew’s is holding a Frost Fair on Saturday 1 December from 10 am until 2 pm in the village hall. There will be a range of stalls (incl. bric-a-brac) and a raffle and of course an excellent café. We do have a limited number of small tables so if you have a craft or product you would like to sell please contact Maureen Hardy. We look forward to seeing you.

Winter Coffee Mornings St. Andrew’s Church is holding winter coffee mornings in the Village hall on the first Saturday of the month during the winter months. After the Frost Fair the next one will be Saturday 5 January. This will be from 10 am until 12 pm, the entrance fee will be £2.50 to include a cup of coffee/tea and a piece of cake/scone. If you feel able to help please contact Maureen Hardy. Why not pop in and enjoy a chat and warming cup of coffee, to cheer us during the darker months. Everyone is welcome from a few months old to rather older!

Greystoke Village Hall Bingos continue Friday 7 December and Friday 18 January both at 7 pm. Prize donations will be gratefully received. The Village Hall AGM is to be held on Tuesday 22 January at 7.30pm.

Swimming Club Monthly Prize Draw We have now designed a new form which is compliant with new legislation regarding personal information. Everyone (existing and new members) needs to fill in the form which will be distributed by collectors in the next few weeks or available on our website. The form gives various options for payment, and any new members interested in joining the monthly prize draw please contact Emma Nielson. The prize draw will continue to pay out half of all collected income in cash prizes. Thank you for your continued support. Greystoke Film Nights We are running two further film nights at Greystoke Village Hall. Saturday 1 December, American Animals (2018, True Story, Crime / Suspense / Drama, Cert 15) and Saturday 19 January, The More You Ignore Me (2018, Cert 15, Comedy / Drama). Tickets are available from the Post Office or from Judith Aris. The evening includes a one-pot supper and ice cream served in the interval. There will be a licensed bar. All proceeds go to swimming pool funds.

Greystoke Brownies & Guides have a renewed zest and over the last few weeks have enjoyed new challenges from the new Girl Guiding programme and mixed in some of their own seasonal activities including Pumpkin Carving, a Sparklers and Sausages evening and a trip to the Town Hall for UK Parliament Week. They were also pleased to take part in the Remembrance Day service. Approaching Christmas they’ll be thinking about how to decorate their tree for the Christmas Tree Festival and enjoying their now-traditional Christmas treat to Giannis! 1st Greystoke Brownies and Guides is for all girls. We meet from 6.30 pm on Mondays in term time – Brownies is for girls aged 7-10, and finishes at 8 pm and Guides is for girls aged 10-14 and finishes at 8.30 pm. As well as Greystoke, our members come from a wide area including Stainton, Newbiggin, Dacre and Penrith – you don’t have to live in Greystoke or indeed the parish!
